So I get an email from one of the East Coast's larger manufacturer of signalling and decorative cannon asking if I could
maybe make them up a sample of a lanyard for firing their guns.
A sennit body of eight (08) strands would certainly provide sufficient strength to allow the firing of the cannon, and any
number of decorative footrope knots, turksheads and star-knots could be fashioned along the length of the firing
lanyard, but we settled on an eight strand "Square" sennit as the most efficacious
Loops can be fashioned at one end or the end can be attached to a ring or a shackle (preferred) for attachment to the
firing mechanism... owner's choice.
This is one of a set of eight 4" shackle pulls I made for a Portugese racing sloop. It is a "square" braid sennit with a
brass thimble eye and an eight-pointed "star" knot to grab and pull on, releasing the snap shackle in difficult sailing
conditions. The overall length is only 4" and the finial knot is a bit small for a firing lanyard, so I came up with these:
24" overall square steamgasket lanyards with a large 8-point starknot as a finial.
They can be made in a slightly larger (1.8mm) line to produce a larger star knot, with or without the brass thimble, or...
The picture on the right shows a comparison between a plain (inner) lanyard and a fancier (outer) lanyard. The plain
lanyards run $60.00 @ while the fancier lanyards as shown run $110.00 @
Length is easily added to your requirements, additional knots, different braids....
These are some knife lanyards
which I made of the 1.4mm poly-
cord in black, white and
dark blue.
I include them so you may see
a few of the variations
available for a long cord. The
star knots and cord changes
are all done while braiding the
sennits.
These are 8-strand sennits in
both square and double-round
styles.
The white lanyard especially
shows:
(a) the "Square" feature to the
sennit,
(b) how a loop can be fastened
to a ring (1), to a thimble (2)
or can be done without any
sort of insert.
This is a necklace of the 3/32" cotton line in a six-strand
"half-round" braid with a "footrope" knot on the end.
The half-round braids are quite strong and suited to
many purposes, one of which is providing a good linear
pull.
Looking for something equally arcane?
Need a special lanyard for the boat, a longer-than-usual snap-shackle pull or one which will reach all the way up to the
head of the mast?
We can do whatever you may need in the way of fancy ropework..... just ask us!
